Popular Mathura Excursions Guide

Mathura Excursions Tourist places around Mathura are popular and well known, just like the city itself. All of these places are associated with the life and times of Lord Krishna in some way or other. These sites are located within 50 kilometers from Mathura, and so, the night stays are optional. Following are some of the famous and popular excursions around Mathura: -

Barsana, a small village, only 45 km, from Mathura, is the birth place of Radha, the consort of Lord Krishna, with whom he never married. This village is surrounded by hills from four sides. It was earlier names as,
Brahmsarin. Barsana is known for its Holi celebrations, called Lath-maar holi, enacted between the residents of Nandgaon and Barsana.

Gokul, nearly 16 km, away from the city Mathura, is a small town where infant Krishna was brought up in secrecy, at the home of his foster mother, Yashoda. Festivals, such as Janmashtami,  Annakut and Trinvat Mela are celebrated here in a distinct style. The most important temple here is Gokul Nathji.

Govardhan, situated 26 kilometers west of Mathura, is a very famous Hindu Pilgrimage in Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at a hilltop named Giriraj.

Nandgaon, situated 10 km from Barsana on the road towards Mathura, was earlier the home of Nanda, the foster-father of Lord Krishna. A little beyond is the Pan Sarovar, a large lake with masonry ghats along its sides. And a few distances away, is the Kadamb grove called Udhoji - Ka- Kyar.

Vrindavan, just 15 km from Mathura, is related to the life and times of Lord Krishna. This place has the largest cluster of temples in the Brij region- both old and modern.  Most popular is the bulky red sandstone Govind Dev Temple. It was one of the most advanced Hindu temples in northern India, built in 1590 by Raja Man Singh of Amber. There are many other temples in Vrindavan, such as the popular Bankey Bihari, Radha Ballabh (built in 1626), Madan Mohan, the 10 storey Pagal Baba, and the Nidhi Van.
