Mathura, one of the most ancient and pious city of Uttar Pradesh, India, is said to be the land of Shri Krishna. In fact, Krishna and Mathura are indistinguishable. They are the two faces of the same coin. This was not only the birthplace of Lord Krishna, but here only he spent his childhood, adolescent hood and last years of his life. This historical and mythological city, Mathura is located at a distance of 145 km south-east of Delhi and 58 km north-west of Agra. Spread in an area of about 3,800 sq. km., today, Mathura, also known as Brajbhoomi is divided into two distinct units - the eastern part in the trans-Yamuna tract with places like Gokul, Mahavan, Baldeo, Mat and Bajna and the western side of the Yamuna covering the Mathura region that encompasses Vrindavan, Govardhan, Kusum Sarovar, Barsana and Nandgaon.
Not only Mathura is a great pilgrimage, but has its own strategic importance. Mathura is said to be the home to a large, advanced oil refinery owned by the Indian Oil Corporation. It is also the base of a flourishing Machine Casting Industry, Silver polishing industry, textile printing industry involving in sari-printing and fabric dyeing. In addition to this, water tap factories are also flourishing in this area.
Mathura is well connected to almost all of the major cities of India, by air, road and rail.
By Air, The nearest airport is Agra, at a mere distance of 47 km. There are regular flights from Agra to several cities of India, including Delhi, Khajuraho and Varanasi.
By Rail, Mathura has its own railway station, and is well connected by train with Agra (1 hour), Bharatpur, Sawai Madhopur and Kota. Taj Express runs daily between Mathura and Delhi (2½ hours). Mathura is an important railway junction with direct trains to many places.
By Road, Mathura is well connected by a network of roads and road transport to all major towns of Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas. It is 141 km south of Delhi and 47 km northwest of Agra. |
